Glasgow City Marketing Bureau is the official destination marketing organisation for metropolitan Glasgow.  It is engaged in national and international activity comprising:

  • Event creation, attraction, management and marketing.
  • Attracting and bidding for conventions, incentives, meetings and exhibition sales.
  • Managing the Accommodation Bookings Service for large room block bookings for conferences, major events and city short breaks.
  • Public Relations
  • Development and implementation of the city branding campaign Glasgow: Scotland with style.
  • Optimisation of the website: www.seeglasgow.com

Despite the economic downturn, hotel developers have shown a continuing high level of confidence in Glasgow due to the healthy current demand and the further projected demand due to a pipeline of conferences and large events confirmed through to 2021.

Glasgow is in a stronger position than most of our competitors thanks to the continuing pipeline of new infrastructure in the coming years as the city gears up for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.  Between November 2009 and 2011, 1200 new hotel rooms will have been released onto the market, including the award winning Blythswood Square, Jumeirah Glasgow, Grand Central and citizenM.

When Zaha Hadid’s iconic new Riverside Museum opens next year, it will do for Glasgow what the Guggenheim did for Bilbao.  Among the other fantastic new infrastructure developments the city can look forward to are the National Arena at the SECC and the National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome, being built for the Commonwealth Games.

The SECC has been integral to Glasgow’s success as a major European destination for conferences and events, and this year it celebrates its 25th anniversary.  The National Arena will be the latest chapter in this success story.

For the fourth consecutive year Glasgow City Marketing Bureau has been voted the best UK Convention Bureau.  This award is voted for by national and international conference organisers and is an independent endorsement from our industry peers.

In the last year we have secured convention business valued at more than £100 million in economic benefit for Glasgow and Scotland.

Glasgow is also unique in its strategic approach of engagement with key agencies within the city and at national level.  The Strategic Major Events Forum was established in 2005 to strengthen Glasgow’s competitive position in the global marketplace and is recognised internationally as a model of best practice.

The city has recently been ranked number eleven in the 2010 world league of ultimate sports cities according to new research.  Glasgow’s high ranking in this prestigious world league table demonstrates the effectiveness of our strategic, collaborative approach to procuring, developing and creating major events for the city.

Developing our meetings and events industry will continue to form an integral part of Glasgow’s economic strategy and GCMB will continue to work in partnership with other city agencies and the private sector to ensure that Glasgow remains a leading player on the global stage.
