New Chairman's Blog

I am delighted to be serving the coming year as Chair of Eventia.  Thanks to everyone who has sent me messages of support and encouragement.

I thought that in this, my first blog of the year, I would set out some of the broad challenges I see for our association.  You might want to think of this as my informal manifesto.  I shall think of it as a checklist against which I shall judge myself at the end of my term.

Firstly, I want to ensure that Eventia continues to deliver relevant added value to all members and stakeholders.  This means addressing an ever wider group: from conference and incentive  agencies to hotel and  destinations partners;  small specialist suppliers to a growing number of creative and production agencies; UK corporate members to overseas organisations; media organisations to  travel providers.  You are all part of our industry and all important to Eventia.

Secondly, I want to ensure that we keep in very close touch with our members, sponsors and other stakeholders, asking regular questions and checking that we are indeed doing what they want from the association.  I particularly want us to broaden our reach beyond our primary Eventia contact  reaching more people at member organisations.  Remember your membership means that every employee within your company is a member, and therefore has access to the services provided. You can send along members of your team to upcoming member inductions, they are held regularly throughout the year and are the perfect opportunity to get up-to-speed on all the latest services and initiatives the association is involved with, and most importantly, how they can utilise the membership services.

Thirdly, I want Eventia to play its part in raising the profile of our medium - events.  Selfishly, events are our livelihood.   Thankfully, events are also the most powerful and effective medium available.  We all work in a great industry.

Next, I want to maintain a keen dialogue with other associations.  There is a good deal of common ground amongst various bodies and we are all beginning to see the benefits of closer working, sharing materials and opportunities.

Last up, I want to ensure that we manage Eventia’s finances effectively and efficiently so that we can deploy surplus on member services.  We need to have a small business mentality, and in small businesses every penny counts.

So what does Eventia need from you?

Give us your feedback.  Eventia only exists because of and for its members.  I simply ask you to play your part in influencing our agenda.  Tell us what you want from your association.  Give us your ideas and thoughts on how we can improve. Don’t be shy!  You can call write, email, and text or twitter us via the Eventia office.

Practise what you preach.  Make the effort to attend Eventia activities.  Send some of your colleagues to a new members inductions.  Find out how you might join one of our working groups and committees, looking at key areas of interest .  Enter the Eventia Awards  .  And if you missed The Summer Eventia, you can still have the advantage of accessing the excellent presentations and other material on the Eventia website.

Now let me ask for your understanding.  It feels like there are a hundred and one things we would like to do.   The Eventia office team and new Eventia Board have passion, enthusiasm, energy, ideas and many other great qualities.  However, we have to be realistic and set priorities, identifying initiatives and actions which we believe are most important to the broad membership.  As I have often said before – it’s far better for us to do fewer things well than strive to do lots … and actually achieve little.  That’s my mantra and I am sticking to it.

So there you have it.  You now know what’s on my mind and you know what I would like to be on yours.  Let’s make the most of the next year!

PS.  I really can’t end my blog without reminding you of the Eventia Awards which will take place at the London Hilton, Park Lane Hilton on Friday 18th November.  It will be a superb night.  Check out the details of award categories and the awards dinner here
