Summer Eventia 2010 Review

2 days & nights of the best networking & education of the year

The Summer Eventia, one of the events industry's foremost annual events was hosted by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and the SECC, who joined forces to showcase some of the most breathtaking facilities and Glaswegian highlights on offer.

The Headquarters hotel was the Crowne Plaza located right next door to the SECC which played host to 230 delegates, speakers, media representatives and sponsors who made up the conference community which was a fantastic endorsement of the value placed by delegates on attending the Summer Eventia.  Feedback from participants has been universally positive encapsulated in the comments of Fiona Brown, Business Tourism Account Manger, Chester and Cheshire who said: 'The Eventia conference was a fabulous event from start to finish, I really enjoyed it!  The breakout sessions in particular were beneficial with plenty of networking opportunities throughout.  The Glasgow Marketing Bureau also showed us true Scottish hospitality with the wonderful food and entertainment at the conference dinner!'

Conference highlights

Delegates interacted at workshops, exchanged ideas and engaged in a range of learning and social activities which put them in touch with top industry leaders, great speakers and colleagues from across the industry spectrum.

Izania Downie CEO Eventia said: 'Our programme this year was the strongest ever  - our first day focused on financial, business and the economy and kicked off with an exciting chat show style debate about the political climate and how it impacts on our industry. Our second day focused on brand communication and we were honoured to have sessions from Google and Imagination.  Our event facilitator this year was Chris Elmitt, Managing Director of Crystal Interactive who did a fantastic job of keeping the delegates energised and engaged with the Speakers and I really hope that everybody who attended learned something new, met somebody new and had some fun along the way.'

The conference kicked off Monday morning with business economist Dominic Swords who told delegates 'there will be a temptation this year to be focused on sales and growth, but if you only do that then you risk not being at the next Summer Eventia.  You need to stand back and look at where opportunities are.'  A strong focus on private sector, profit-driven growth rather than the public sector will resonate throughout the events industry.

In the spirit of collaboration Eventia chairman Mark Saxby joined association heads from Meeting Professionals International, SITE, International Special Event Society, Institute of Travel and Meetings and Professional Convention Management Association to examine the role of industry bodies in the future.   This was the first time that these six leading global associations have come together in this way. Agreeing that collaboration was a key element of associations' success, MPI chief development officer Didier Scaillet argued that each has it's own niche. 'We should be working together and sitting together, he said, but it isn't easy.'

Tuesday's programme focused on the brand and Eventia were delighted to have Andrew Barke from Google who told delegates they needed to 'wake up to video' as 90% of web traffic will be made up of video by 2013.

Kenny Holmes, creative director of Imagination then confirmed what Andrew had said but argued that there would always be a place for live events.  'In a world where the virtual becomes more real, the live event becomes ever more vital', he said.

Monday’s evening entertainment was hosted brilliantly by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau who treated delegates and guests to an experience of ‘the spirit of Glasgow’.  The evening was staged at the Old Fruitmarket, an entrancing venue full of period charm including its lofty vaulted roof, immense cast iron columns and archways and wonderful balcony with spiral staircases.  The amazing Victorian street market scene came alive with period entertainment including a tarot reader, flea circus and fabulous Scottish dancers and then all were brought up to modern times with awesome street dancers and a fabulous band to dance the night away to!

And finally........

Mark Saxby, Group Sales and Marketing Director at events agency WorldEvents, the new Chair of Eventia said: 'Eventia continues to be more and more respected as a body that promotes and supports the needs of the whole industry.

As our membership continues to go from strength to strength events like The Summer Eventia  prove that Eventia offers a visibility as well as a voice for the industry and we will continue to raise and encourage the importance of live events and face-to-face communication.  Over this next year our key aims include things such as: continue to target the corporate and association markets for membership; offer greater networking and education opportunities; collaborate with other organisations in areas such as CPD and lobbying and continue to offer best advice in any new legislation that is planned.  We will work with our members in various forums to maximise and deliver usable benefits to the members and support their businesses thus ensuring we are doing our job as the industry association.'

We are thrilled to announce that Summer Eventia 2011 will be taking place in Cardiff 26th-28th June.
