As the world-famous city on the banks of the River Mersey prepares to be the European Capital of Culture in 2008, Liverpool is fast becoming a top choice among conference and event organisers. The Mersey Partnership Conference Bureau is now building on this success to take their destination offer even further to open up for an even wider market.
Due to open in 2008, Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool is an exiting new development on the Liverpool Waterfront, and further up the coast, in Southport, the complete redevelopment and refurbishment of the Southport Theatre and Floral Hall, which will benefit from a £40 million investment is also due for completion in 2008.
These developments are only a small part of the transformation of Liverpool and Merseyside. Add a thrilling £30 million redesign and redevelopment of Aintree racecourse, a number of recent and forthcoming hotel developments, Liverpool One, a top European standard retail and leisure area in the middle of the city centre and a new cruise liner landing facility and you can start to imagine the scale of the changes this region is going through.
A wide variety of unique venues, such as St George’s Hall, Sefton Park Palm House and the Mersey Ferries, St Helen’s World of Glass and Knowsley Hall are already part of the offer. So are major hotel brands like Malmaison, Radisson SAS, Crowne Plaza, Marriott, Thistle and Holiday Inn. In other words, Liverpool and Merseyside provides an attractive professional offer as well as a varied leisure and retail experience for your delegates when not in conference.
A centre of maritime, cultural and sporting excellence, Liverpool’s success in being crowned European Capital of Culture 2008 is underpinned by its unrivalled architecture and heritage, including its world-famous waterfront. In 2004, UNESCO granted the city’s waterfront and Cultural Quarter World Heritage Site status, placing the city’s Pier Head alongside Stonehenge and the Great Wall of China as one of the world’s most important places.
Liverpool and Merseyside is easily accessible by plane, car, train and ferry. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the fastest growing in Europe, which makes the destination increasingly popular. In addition, it is in close proximity to Manchester International airport, only 45 minutes drive away. If you travel from London, you are just over two hours away from Liverpool on the Virgin Pendolino train service.
